Plastic Whale has been fighting for plastic-free waters since 2014. The organisation wants to show that plastic waste is not worthless, but instead a durable material that can be used as a raw material for valuable products. An example of this is the seven boats which Plastic Whale has built entirely out of plastic that was fished out of the Amsterdam canals.

Sustainable strategy for companies

Plastic Whale is not limited to creating awareness about plastic waste. Marius Smit, Plastic Whale Captain: "Organisations are increasingly asking what they can do with their waste or with their objectives in terms of sustainability. The answer to their question is often not easy, and demands a thorough approach.” This is why Plastic Whale and the Design Thinking Center in Amsterdam have partnered up. "The partnership allows Plastic Whale to involve and inspire businesses, whilst the Design Thinking Center can work with these companies to develop the right strategy in the field of sustainability. The power of Design Thinking can be harnessed to help companies in creating a positive impact on the environment and society", Smit continues.

Huub Waterval, Chief Energy Officer at the Design Thinking Center: "Our ambition is to become a B-Corporation". In becoming a (future) Benefit Corporation, we think about the economy of the future and use a combination of technology, business and design thinking to solve social, business and environmental challenges. While exchanging ideas with Plastic Whale, it seemed natural for us to help facilitate companies in their search for creative and innovative solutions."

5000 PET bottles

Together, Design Thinking Center and Plastic Whale will show you what to do differently. "Together with Plastic Whale we are building a Design Thinking Center boat made completely of recycled plastic. Some 5,000 PET bottles fished out of the canals by our guests are used to build the boat. We now plan to take the next step in our partnership by helping other businesses in finding a smart solution to achieve their sustainability goals.”

Plastic fishing is an integral part of the whole design thinking experience. "Prior to a session our customers are brought to the Design Thinking Center on a Plastic Whale boat. This way design challenges are automatically viewed from a sustainable perspective. We are excited about being able to help Plastic Whale with their ambitions. A true partnership."
